Doa'a El Um (The Mother's Prayer)

(Cairo, Egypt, August 2020)
Noreen Hosny (New York City, United States)

I took this photo during my trip to Cairo over the summer. My grandmother is depicted praying for those who seek refuge from their native countries. Many times, these refugees encounter setbacks and violence just to obtain safety. She seeks to aid these people through her prayers. In fact, in the Islamic region, a mother’s prayer is said to be the strongest, most impactful one of all. When I took this photo, I wanted to convey the true sense of peace and connection felt during prayer.
